Volvo announced that it will offer a number of upgrades for its new model year V70, XC70 and S80, including the introduction of the latest iteration of its infotainment system as well as refined D5 and D3 diesel engines with increased performance and lower fuel consumption.

The V70, XC70 and S80 are the first Volvos to feature higher performance versions of the five-cylinder D5 and D3 turbodiesels. The 2.4-liter D5 diesel unit now develops 215 horsepower and 440 Nm (324.5 lb-ft) of torque (up 10HP and 20 Nm respectively), while posting an 8 percent reduction in fuel consumption.

For example, the S80 D5 with manual gearbox returns a combined figure of 4.9 liters/100 km (48 mpg US) and emits 129 g of CO2 per kilometer, which are identical figures to the D3-powered S80.

The 2.0-liter D3 engine continues to develop 163HP and 400 Nm of torque, but Volvo claims the driveability has been improved thanks to the fine-tuning of the turbocharger.

Styling changes are discreet and include revamped headlamps with optional active xenon lights, LED turn indicators integrated into the door mirrors (for the V70 and S80), two new wheel designs for the V70/S80 and one for the XC70, plus new colors

The new model year brings the refreshed Volvo Sensus infotainment system with a five-inch or seven-inch color screen in the upper part of the center console through which the driver can access a range of settings, such as for the Collision Warning and Pedestrian Detection systems, the Active Cruise Control, lighting, climate unit and audio system. The larger 7-inch version also displays information and images from the navigation system, phone, reversing and panorama cameras, DVD player and digital TV.

Safety upgrades include the addition of the Pedestrian Detection system with Full Auto Brake, previously presented in the S60, V60 and XC60 models. The system uses radar and a camera to monitor pedestrians in front of the car and can automatically brake the car to avoid a collision.

Other additions include the City Safety system that can help avoid low-speed rear-end collisions, offered as standard on all three models, and also the Adaptive Cruise Control system.

2012 Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 get Revised Diesel Engines and New Features

For 2010, the front wheel drive Volvo C30 is equipped with a 2.5 liter turbo charged engine in both the T5 2 door hatchback and the R Design 2 door hatchback models. The engine is a dual overhead cam (DOHC), inline, 5 cylinder engine with a maximum power rating of 227 hp at 5,000 rpm and a 236 foot pounds of torque delivered at a range of 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm. The engine enables the C30 to have a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. The engine's bore is 83 mm and its stroke is 93.2 mm. The compression ratio is 9 to 1. The engine features variable valve timing and camshaft technology to make sure all twenty four valves are operating at their maximum efficiency. Multi point fuel injection improves the C30's performance as well as its fuel economy.

The C30 accelerates from 0 mph to 60 mph in just over 7 seconds; with its standard manual transmission (an optional automatic transmission is available at additional cost. The gas mileage delivered by the C30 is a composite 24 miles per gallon (mpg): 21 mpg in city environments and 29 mpg on the highway. The superb engineering of the Volvo C3 has earned it a ultra low emission vehicle (ULEV II) rating, meaning that it is a very environmentally responsible vehicle to drive.

If you are interested to meet the Volvo C30 firsthand, you can rush to the Paris Motor Show which would be happening this December. After all, everybody would not be able to see just what kind of power and what kind of design this car has. And being able to see it upfront and in the flesh would be something worth the long wait.

According to Volvo, they are targeting a production of 65,000 units of the Volvo C30 in a year. They are also expecting a huge amount of buyers of this vehicle to hail from the continent of Europe. Those who have already set sight on the Volvo C30 concept vehicle which was shown off at the Detroit Motor Show early this year would find not a lot of changes to the production version of the Volvo C30.

Volvo V60 wagon has already been presented last summer in Paris, and then said that Europe will be offered 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine and 2.4-liter five-cylinder petrol version in conjunction with the 2.0-liter turbocharged version. Top of the range should be a 3.0-liter turbocharged unit at 304 hp We also recall that recently, in Geneva, was shown a hybrid version of the Volvo V60.

Volvo c30

With its U.S. sales steadily declining for 7 years now, Volvo has no choice but to radically rethink its strategy. The Swedish automaker is currently offering nine models in the States or about as many as Volkswagen does, but it sold almost five times fewer cars than the Germans in 2010.

Consequently, the Swedish brand, which is now owned by China's Geely, has decided to significantly reduce the number of models in its North American lineup and concentrate on best-selling vehicles in an effort to increase sales.

“Five or six is probably a good number”, said Doug Speck, head of Volvo’s operations in the U.S., in a telephone interview for Bloomberg. “We have to focus on the key segments with significant volume potential”.

Mr. Speck confirmed that the V50 estate is sure to go, although didn’t specify exactly when, saying that dealers will be notified first. The manufacturer hasn’t decided yet which other models will be phased out, but it will definitely keep the S60 sedan and the XC60 and XC90 crossovers, he added.

Volvo will also try to boost sales with more advertising and expects “double-digit” percentage growth in the U.S in 2011.

As for the near future, Mr. Speck said that Volvo will introduce hybrids and all-electric cars, but declined to say if it will bring diesels to America.
